prey

just outside my windows,
a hawk hunted, killed and devoured a bird using only their natural eyesight,
talons, claws and beak;

— most likely a mourning dove without benefit of camouflage of the prairie, lawn or bare ground —

i learned from following
“The Daily James” that
80% of hawks do not survive much beyond their second year of life — primarily because of starvation;

all raptors are essential members of every healthy ecosystem — and sometimes a songbird or woodpecker or dove dies as prey in a violent but honest hunting.
