that’s all i know

a companion truths poem to, and
influenced in part by, this most beautiful
dreamt song and these sweetly sung truths,
by Rodney Crowell.

my mother turned 75 years-old yesterday
and that’s all i know,
about her
anymore

my dead best friend’s son
graduated high school last spring
and that’s all i know,
about him
anymore

the majority of people of the dominant culture in America
are unconcerned about
climate, the environment, biodiversity,
sustainability, workers,
genocide, famine,
or about concentration camps,
the evidence is in their investment portfolios
and travel photos,
in the way they make their money
— not to “live” but
to have and to have and to have — more
and that’s all i know,
about them
anymore

the people in power and the majority of people in this World
are concerned only with their personal or national comfort,
with the illusions of peace and deceptions of “growth”
rather than true liberation and true conservation
for and of human and non-humankind, on Earth,
and that’s all i know,
about politics
anymore

the millions of species of flora and fauna,
on Earth
are a living story of interdependence,
are a living story of millions of years of adaptation
these living species will not evolve and survive
human biomass and waste,
desertification and deforestation,
metastatic microplastic infestation,
hothouse atmosphere and rising, hot tub seas
nuclear radiation,
and AI,
and that’s all i know,
about the future of life
anymore

the blue and green marble is not a paradise,
not an Eden
and it never was,
it is a prison planet, a mere solar satellite for escaping, lost or recycling souls,
there is no heaven, the Gods are diabolical,
and “all the devils are here” on Earth,
and that’s all i know,
about religion
anymore

it’s better to have not been born at all
than to live with or witness
enduring deprivation, constant struggle,
and the experiences of pain, suffering, war, horror and loss,
and the inevitable corruption of integrity, of empathy, of spirit, before inevitable death,
and that’s all i know,
about existence

anymore.
