summer

june, you, monthlong solstice

your 30 days of day

of Light’s false dominion /

he suggests a good way to estimate
the number of roses on my climbing rose bush
is to count the number of buds and blossoms on one linear foot of branch

so, I do.

there are 60 or more

i probably missed some

then 6,000? or more?! on this eight year old gem

how many june bouquets, boutonnières and corsages they would a florist supply

instead,
i keep them all for future rose hips,

and refuse to prune
unless a branch cracks under

the weight of drenched petals in this year’s wild june rainstorms

so many vases i have filled this june.

i suggest that i may create a perimeter of this variety of rose
an impenetrable devastating fortress of thornage — a natural, beautiful “devil’s rope”

i once saw a group of mule deer clear an 8′ fence in colorado — without a running start, could a herd of robot dogs do that?

he sees i’ve saved old nails, screws and Mexican coke and beer bottle caps in an empty 3lb coffee tin

the obliquity of the ecliptic

Summer Solstice

One experience of living rurally — without any obstructions of buildings or infrastructure — and with a full southern exposure out my front door, generous windows and an unencumbered view of all four cardinal directions — it’s like i am in the center of a beautiful compass at all times — is, that i have been able to observe and better understand the obliquity of the ecliptic:

marking the farthest northeastern point of the Sun’s eager rise and the farthest northwestern point of the Sun’s leisurely set at the Summer solstice with my own eyes — the Sun making a deep, high horseshoe arc on those long Summer days,

and to watch the Sun’s progression/regression daily,

and, to witness how at the Winter solstice, the Sun just sleeps in, lazily rising in southeastern Sky, just barely making an appearance for us in the northern latitudes — offering us the shallowest, little arc of light before quickly bedding down again in the southwestern Sky;

Darkness is so precious in the Summer and the light is so precious in the Winter. The darkness is so gloriously abundant in the Winter and the light is so gloriously a abundant in Summer;

i am so grateful and privileged to have experienced this solar panorama and time lapse in real life for eight years now, after living many decades in a major North American city — Chicago, without it;

and,

below is my favorite ever foto to share on the Solstice: Attila Kálmán faithfully and wondrously captured the obliquity of the ecliptic — his camera tracking the Sun’s path from a point on the Northern Hemisphere of Earth from Summer to Winter Solstice in 2012.

Perfect for explaining our Sun, axial tilt and seasons to a child
(or to a white American adult).

Equinox Upon All Your Houses! | All, Praise Theia!

Equinox upon all your houses!

and an Equinox and Solstice prayer:

All praise, Theia!

Thank you for life, the genesis of the path of our axial light;

in your violent, alchemical transformation,

you twice, gave us our light,

the cycle of seasons,

and the precession of the equinoxes in the northern and southern hemispheres of our life-giving Mother Earth,

your gifts are incomparable; an enduring aweing abundance.

All, praise, you Theia, for our Earth Mother Gaia and our Moon, Selene!

derivative work based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet — Mercutio’s curse, as exclaimed to the Montague and Capulet families and their factions as he realizes he is mortally wounded by Tybald’s sword — he, collateral damage in the melee of their war of and for power — and against, love.

for the Earthling/environmental/political take on the equinox:
